Varsity, JV Volleyball Seasons End in Playoffs

Tuesday was a difficult day for the St. Joseph School volleyball teams.

Late in the afternoon, the varsity girls were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs at Hale Park, playing well but losing a close contest to St. Nicholas of Tolentine.

Early in the evening, the junior varsity girls were eliminated in the semi-finals of the playoffs at Wentworth Park, losing to the Kinzie School team.

Both the varsity and junior varsity Knights played strong and skillfully this season, impressing all who saw them and representing St. Joe's very well.

Hold your heads high, girls. You did us proud...

Great News About One of Our Graduates

By Lawrence Manetti, St. Joseph School Principal

I always enjoy sharing good news about the achievements of St. Joseph School alumni.

Today I offer congratulations to Megan Heurich (class of 2011) on her profile of Mary Ann Minick, which was recently published online by TribLocal. It was also featured on the front page of the Southwest News-Herald.

As reported in the story, "Minick is the founder of the All Pets Wellness Foundation, which provides funds to care for sick and injured pets to owners who cannot afford it."

Megan is a freshman and honors student at Mount Assisi Academy in Lemont.

Her story is both well-reported and well-written---a compelling account of a person working to make the world a better place for everyone.

Congratulations, Megan!

In boys varsity basketball action on Monday night at Hale Park, the Knights jumped out to an 8-4 halftime lead over the St. Turibius Trojans, but then lost a heart breaker of a game, 19-17, as Turibius scored the final bucket with less than two seconds on the clock.

Here are a few video highlights from tonight's action:

In earlier action on Monday at Hale, the Sutherland Bulldogs sprinted to a 33-15 victory over the Queen of the Universe Cobras. Bridgeport Catholic Academy defeated Hale, 23-19.

The Knights' next game at Hale is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, when they will square off against the St. Albert the Great Sabres. Tip off is 11:30 a.m.

Please come out and cheer on the Knights!

Casino Nights a Success!

The dice were rolling, the wheel was spinning, the dealers were dealing, and the joint was jumping---as Centennial Hall was transformed into a casino for two nights, all to benefit St. Joseph School.

Featuring such popular games of chance as blackjack, poker, craps and roulette, the Casino Nights fundraiser drew people from all across the Southwest Side and southwest suburbs. A Texas Hold 'em tournament on Saturday night added to the excitement.

While final totals are not in, the event appears to be a success by multiple measures.

And many thanks to all the volunteers who gave of themselves---again---to raise needed revenue for our school. You are the brains, the brawn, the backbone and muscle of St. Joseph School!

Third/Fourth Graders Beat St. Richard in Soccer

If the headline of this blog post looks familiar, it is!

It is nearly identical to the headline from a week ago, when the third/fourth grade Knights beat the St. Richard Rockets (black squad), 6-1.

Well earlier today, the Knights (blue jerseys) did it again, this time defeating St. Richard's white squad, 7-1.

Despite facing a team that was slightly taller and larger, the Knights again showed that there is no substitute for speed, skill and determination.

In fact, the game was nearly a shutout until the Rockets scored their lone goal with just 1:18 remaining in the contest.

The Knights' next game is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 12, when they will face the blue squad from St. Bede the Venerable.

Games are played indoors at the St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish Center, 4626 West 63rd Street.

Come on out and cheer on the Knights. See you there?
